Choose the right selection criteria in the goals directory
In order to select appropriate goals for the student, it is important to choose the right selection criteria and consider the following tips:
1. Consider the choice of selection criteria.
There are six available selection criteria:
- Grade
- Age
- Cycle
- Core competence
- Key feature
- Keyword
You can choose between one or more selection criteria. The number of selected criteria will reduce the number of presented goals.
You can enter a keyword in your goals research (with or without other selection criteria). Tip: if entering a verb, enter the verb in the present tense. Our goals are written in the present tense, you may modify to futur tense (if you are more comfortable) when you select your goals.
2. Consider that the grade, age and cycle presented in every goal represent the school year, age and appropriate cycle to start learning those skills (based on the progression of learning ).
Therefore, you need to decide if you should choose the chronological age of the student or the actual age when he/she starts to learn that skill. For instance, my student is in 4th elementary grade and he/she is 9 years old: I will select 9+ years old. However, if my student has difficulties in decoding complex words, since he/she started learning complex sounds from the age of 6, I will then have to choose 6+ years old, instead of 9+ years old.
3. Consider the strategic rules for your goals selection.
* It is not necessary to select age, grade and school cycle at the same time to have targeted goals.
a) Grade selection : By ticking a grade, only the goals corresponding to the selected school year will appear.
Where appropriate, you need to be sure that the selected school year matches the targeted age. E.g., for the 4th grade (elementary), the corresponding ages (according to the progress of the learning process) are 8+ and 9+ years old.
b) Age selection: When checking an age, only the goals corresponding to the selected age will appear.
Where appropriate, you need to be sure that selected age corresponds to the targeted school year. E.g, if 14+ years old is selected, the corresponding school years would be grade 9, grade 10 or grade 11 (3rd 4th and 5th year of secondary) cycle two.
c) Cycle selection: When checking a school cycle, only the goals corresponding to that school cycle will appear.
Where appropriate, you need to make sure that the selected school cycle corresponds to the targeted school year, or selected age. E.g., for high school education, cycle 2, the corresponding components are grade 9, 10 and 11 and 14+ years old.
d) Core competence and Key feature selection: When selecting a core competence, only the goals corresponding to that competence will appear. If you select a core competence key feature, only the goals corresponding to that key feature will appear.
Where appropriate, it is important to make sure that the core competencies and key features match.
Please note that it is possible to associate a goal with one or more competencies. The displayed competence is a suggestion. You can make your own additions to the student's IEP. E.g., the goal presented below is associated with the key feature (circled in red) "uses the strategies, knowledge and techniques required by the writing situation." However, the teacher added the two key features shown (the arrow).
